Next week’s sketchbook is a hand holding an object: Clutch keys, hold a fork, hold a paintbrush, etc. Do a detailed value study of your hand. Worry more about the values than whether or not it looks realistic. If it’s too hard to hold an object for a long period of time, take a photograph of your hand with the object, and then print it out on paper and work from that. It is important to print it out, because it’s far too difficult to see details if you’re just looking on your iPhone’s screen. And speaking of iPhones, I don’t want to see any cellphones in any of these drawings – they’re too big, and too smooth. In order to get credit, you need to have roughly 50% of the fingers showing. You also should not attempt to do anything glass, unless you are a more advanced drawer – that’s really hard (see the second example below).
